Saturday, June 7 Olympia Comics Festival 5:30pm doors/6:00pm show Suggested $1.00 donation at the door ALL AGES This year's special guests are Jeffrey Brown, known for his candid autobiographical accounts of failed relationships; Jim Woodring, who draws silent comics about a strange creature in a stranger world; and Michel Gagne an animator/illustrator who's worked on films like Ratatouille and publishes his own comic, The Saga of Rex. The festival kicks off with the Northwest Cartoonist Expo from noon to five at The Vault (425 Franklin St.). Open panel discussions, interviews and workshops will take place throughout the afternoon. Sunday, June 8- World Ocean Day Presented by People for Puget Sound "Sea-Cinema" 4:30pm doors/5:00pm screening FREE!! Join the City of Olympia and People For Puget Sound to celebrate World Ocean's Day on the big screen! We'll be showing several films about our oceans to inspire you and capture your imagination." Planet Earth – Shallow Seas: The vast majority of ocean life calls the shallow seas home. Rich with coral reefs, mangroves, swamps, kelp forests and sea-grass plains, the world’s shallow seas include the open waters off icy islands, thick with penguins, krill and whales. ALSO SHOWING: Song of the Salish Sea, Where Have All the Orcas Gone?, Space Dolphin and MORE! Come to be entertained! Come to learn about the Puget Sound! Come to celebrate our planet’s salty seas!
Saturday, June 14- OFS and KAOS 89.3fm Presents KAOS Super Saturday Carn-Evil of Fun with Pure Cirkus, and guests The Penny Dreadfuls, also outside, Fish Tale Hoppin’ Barley Feetwarmers. (with Vince Brown, Cary Black, Tommy Russell, Barb Collins) 6:00pm street party begins/8:00pm doors open/8:30pm show ALL Ages with Beer Garden in the upstairs Mezzanine $10.00 OFS & KAOS Members/$15.00 General Admission/$5.00 for kids under 12 years old. Pure Cirkus mixes elements of street performance, Cirque Noir or "Dark Cirkus", live theater, circus acts, dance, burlesque, tribal art and live music, with more modern forms of performance such as grinder performance and fire manipulation, along with their stunning costumes, height-defying stilt walkers and aerialists, illusionists, comical clowns, jaw dropping acts of demented bravery by the geeks, freaks and acrobats. Also local aerialist Linnea Rothenmaier of the Penny Dreadfuls, formerly known as Femme de Fabrique, will perform solo with violist Gabriel Will and Violinist Ian Ackerman. Come early (6:00pm) and join the party in front of the Capitol Theater with live music in the street with Fish Tale Hoppin’ Barley Feetwarmers. (with Vince Brown, Cary Black, Tommy Russell, Barb Collins), grab some fun fair treats, a vegan and “not so” dog from Darby’s Restaurant. Although we’re calling it a family event, beware of the clash of both the macabre and mystical side of the three-ring circus as it is brought to life through the human body in its PUREst form! All ages International bestseller and winner of the George Polk Book Award for Blackwater: The Rise of the World’s Most Powerful Mercenary Army is the dark story of the rise of this powerful mercenary army, ranging from the streets of Iraq, to the hurricane-ravaged US gulf, to Washington DC where Blackwater executives are hailed as new heroes in the war on terror. While a correspondent for the national radio and television show “Democracy Now!,” Scahill reported extensively from Iraq through both the Clinton and Bush administrations. Traveling around the hurricane zone in the wake of Katrina, Scahill exposed the presence of Blackwater mercenaries in New Orleans and his reporting sparked a Congressional inquiry and an internal Department of Homeland Security investigation. Proceeds from this event benefit KAOS Community Radio 89.3fm and the Olympia Film Society! OFS Presents- What You Got? Now on our fifth year, the youth volunteers of the Olympia Film Society have produced What You Got? – Youth Festival. This annual festival was created to showcase the art, music and films of our peers in a space that will not judge, oppress, reject or condemn youth, we hope to open people's eyes to the spectrum of talent that youth have to offer our community, society and world, while encouraging youth to continue meaningful relationships with creative expression through art. In addition to FREE workshops and visual art, films included are The Meek--- Ittai Orr, Shorts-- Owen Bates, My Life's Notice-- YAYA Media, a premier film by the Seattle Girls School, along with live music by Numbskullz, The Getaway Scene, Anna Bri (female hip hop), Hi-Five, Dj Scout, The Cut Throats, Logical Deer, DEK, Moon Runners, The Vintage Valkyries and much more! Sunday, June 29- the 14th Olympia Experimental Music Festival Presents Eyes and Ears Pacific Vortex is an afternoon matinee of experimental media art and music curated by Eric Ostrowski of Seattle and Carl Diehl of Portland that features films, videos and live performances. The artists included in this program provoke previously imperceptible art forms from malfunctioning apparatuses, cultural detritus, and other residual media. From live video improvisations to calculated re-animation, from dada-mined archives to wormhole theories of collage this event celebrates anomalous audio-visual pursuits. This show is part of the 14th Olympia Experimental Music Festival. Bands include: Blood Clot (Olympia), Chaostic Magic (Seattle), Featured Artists: Devon Damonte, Jon Behrens, Doug Lane, Bridget Irish, LoVid, noteNdo, Daniel Heila, Ryan T. Dunn, JiRCs, Mack Mcfarland, Jesse England. Friday, July 11- OFS Presents Kids of Widney High 8:00pm doors/8:30pm show Free Event! All Ages For the first time over the course of their rise to international underground fame, the Kids are embarking on a full-fledged tour up the West Coast! Based out of Los Angeles, CA, the world-famous KIDS OF WIDNEY HIGH are a group of young adults with developmental disabilities who write, record, and produce their own unique brand of rock music. Compared in the past to Daniel Johnston and Wesley Willis, the Kids have been covered by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the Aquabats, and Osaka Popstar (comprised of members of the Ramones, the Misfits, and Black Flag), and have worked closely with such musical luminaries as Mike Patton Jackson Browne. They were also prominently featured in the hit comedy THE RINGER alongside Johnny Knoxville and Katherine Heigl. In addition to spreading their inimitable music to a score of new fans, the Kids will also be showcasing their other multidisciplinary creative endeavors; they will be exhibiting their ethereal "art films," they will be displaying their magnificent "outsider art" paintings, drawings, and photography, and they will be having readings of their intimate, singular writings. Rock and roll aerobics! Inflatable monkeys! Dancing sock puppets! Going bananas! Circus tents! Jumping! Yelling! More jumping! Each show can only be as awesome as all of the people involved. They’ll be bringing the rock, but they need you to bring something too. They want all of your joy, your dreams, your boundless energy, and even your nervous, caffeinated-excitement.
